Method to repartition your Harddisk without formating it.

Part 2:

For all XP users:
When you buy a new computer, sometimes the hard drive partitions are already set up for you. If you want to use a new hard drive, you need to partition it at set up time. You may decide that you don't want everything in single big partition because of a variety of reasons, but Windows won't give you any options for changing your partitions other than reformatting it and losing all of your data. There are many programs, like Partition Magic etc., that will help you to re size and create new partitions without losing data. But Partition Magic costs around $60 and it isn't a program that you are going to use everyday.

There is a way to change your partitions without reformatting and without buying any additional software. It uses a Linux live CD to boot your computer and prepare for a Linux installation. Don’t worry; you are not actually going to install Linux. Every Linux CD includes a program to resize your Windows partition to make room for Linux because Windows usually takes up the whole hard drive. Once we create the space for Linux, we can actually format it as a Windows partition, either NTFS or FAT32.
First, you need to download the Linux live CD.Download the ISO and burn it to a CD as an ISO image. Check your CD burning software for info on burning an ISO. Once you have your CD, you are ready to begin.
Before you start- it is recommended to do a disk clean up, get rid of unnecessary files and defragment your hard drive to create as much continuous free space as possible. If your drive is very fragmented, you may want to defragment twice.
WARNING- backup all important files. Although unlikely, it is possible to lose data. Even the programs like Partition Magic give you this warning.
Set your computer BIOS to boot from the CD drive as the first option. Follow these notes if you don't know how to select the first boot device. http://winuxtips.blogspot.com/2011/12/how-to-select-first-boot-device-at.html .
I will show you how the partition takes place in Ubuntu 11.04.
So get your installation disk ready, insert it into your computers optical drive, reboot, and let’s get started. On Ubuntu, the installer will give you the option to boot into a live CD environment or to bypass the live CD environment and begin installation.

1.Select your language and click forward.

2. Just click forward.

3.Click on something else and click forward.

4. Click on new partition table.
5. Click forward.

6. You will get the partition manager window for creating/deleting partitions.Click on Add.
7. Now, there are so many field in new partition window -
  • New Partition Size : The size of the partition you want.
  • Location for the New Partition : beginning (if you want it to appear on the top in grub menu (when the system starts) – default OS ) or end (if you want the Ubuntu 11.10 to appear at the end in OS list at GRUB).Let’s choose anything.
  • File System (use as) – select Ext4 journaling file system.
  • Mount Point – select / (forward slash), it’s used to mount additional file systems, forward slash means – mounting is done with reference to root.
Then click OK to apply.
8. Then click quit as if you want just a drive.
The next time you restart you will found the drive. Thanks
