This post is for those people who are Windows users and want to repartition their Hard disk without formatting it. For those Windows 7 & Vista users can do it in a simpler way by using Disc Management tool. This can be done by trying the following steps.
If you are logged in as an administrator, you can repartition your hard disk by using the Disk Management tool. You can reduce the space of the existing partition or volume to get some disk space, from which you can create a new partition or volume.
1. Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button .
1. Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button .
2. Clicking Control Panel, click System and Security.
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. In the left pane, under Storage, click Disk Management.
In the Shrink dialog, you have to enter the amount you want to shrink but not the new size. For example, if you want to shrink your 50gb of your partition to 10gb so that it will be 40gb, enter 10000 into the box:
5. Follow the instructions.
Extend a Partition
In the Disk Management screen, just right-click on the partition that you want to shrink, and select “Extend Volume” from the menu.
On this screen, you have to specify the amount that you want to increase the partition. In this case, I’m going to extend it back by 50GB size that it was before.
Note that the extend partition feature only works with contiguous space.
