Method To Disable Compression Of Old Files By Using Disk Cleanup Tool

Compression of Old Files option in XP/vista disk cleanup tool doesn’t mean to delete any files from the hard disk. But it just compresses those files that Windows hasn’t used for a specified period of time. Those  files are still available, but there will be a slight increase in the access times as the files are in decompressed form when we access it on the next time. Note that when Compressed Old Files are highlighted in Vista disk cleanup tool, an Options button appears, clicking it you will be allowed to set the number of days that to be waited before an inaccessible file is compressed.

When you runs Disk Cleanup tool on a Windows XP or Vista , you will see that it pauses for a long time when checking for files that should be compressed. To solve this problem, follow these steps:
  • Click on the Start and click Run.
  • Type regedit, then press ENTER.
  • Find and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\CompressOldFiles
  • In the right hand side, double click on REG_SZ (default) to edit it.
  • A window appears having a long string of characters like B50F5260-0C21-11D2-AB56-00A0C9082678 in the Value Data field
  • clear out those value data field and click OK.
  • Quit Registry Editor and reboot your computer.
  • Run Disk Cleanup again and you won't see the compressed old files anymore.
